Get ready for an unforgettable and hard-fought rugby battle in this week’s RugbyExpo video as we dive into Round 2 of the clash between the Aspen Gents and the Denver Water Dogs. This game was more than just a match; it was a fight for pride, momentum, and playoff hopes. Before we get into the action, I want to send a huge thank you to all of our viewers. Your support fuels our passion for rugby and keeps us motivated to share these moments with you.
In this video, you’ll witness the intensity of the Water Dogs’ last home match of the regular season, where every tackle, break, and turnover carried immense weight. The match started with a tough uphill battle for the Dogs, who found themselves pinned in their own half and down by two early tries. But everything changed when winger Juta Vakabuta broke free in the 21st minute for a much-needed try that ignited the team’s spirit and brought the crowd to life.
The video captures the physicality and drama of the match, including my own efforts as the Water Dogs’ fullback. From making crucial solo tackles to shutting down Aspen’s threatening breakaways, every moment was charged with energy. One of the pivotal moments came early in the second half when I was taken down with a clothesline tackle that should have seen harsher punishment than a yellow card. Just minutes later, another scuffle ensued when Aspen’s inside center swung at me after I forced a turnover, resulting in another yellow card for the visitors.
With Aspen down two men and the Water Dogs on the brink of a comeback, the tension was palpable. The Dogs pushed up to Aspen’s 5m line, only for an illegal tackle to dislodge the ball from 8-man Jacob Russell’s arms, stifling a crucial attacking opportunity. Despite the team’s relentless efforts, calls didn’t go our way, and Aspen managed to extend their lead after a penalty saw hooker Steve-O Flores sent to the sin bin.
Even with late-game opportunities and a final heroic run out of our own half, the score remained 28-14 in Aspen’s favor. The loss dropped us to third on the RMR ladder, making next week’s trip to Park City a must-win for our playoff dreams to stay alive.
But rugby is more than just the game—it’s the community, the resilience, and the fun that follows. After the match, the Water Dogs and Colorado Rush teammates came together for an epic Halloween Colfax bar crawl and scavenger hunt, tipping generously, buying shots for bartenders, and lifting the spirits of everyone they encountered.
