The Richard Hannon-trained Billesdon Brook endured a nightmare passage in this Nursery Handicap at Goodwood back in August 2017 as the juvenile struggled to find a clear run under jockey Sean Levey. However, the pair did not give up, weaving through rivals and storming home for a most unlikely victory!
The homebred filly had finished third in a Listed race at Sandown just seven days earlier but reappeared quickly on favourable terms from a handicap mark of 87 and was sent off the 100/30 favourite. Victory never looked likely until the final 20 yards in what was truly an extraordinary race.
The Champs Elysees filly would kick on from this triumph and enjoy a hugely successful career, winning the 1000 Guineas at odds of 66/1 at Newmarket in May 2018, before returning to the Rowley Mile in late 2019 and securing another top level success with an emotional victory in the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes.
